Web Developer/Administrator-SOSS Hybrid/Remote

System Offices Shared Services


Job Summary

Create, maintain, administer and manage web content for a variety of University of Illinois System websites administered by System Offices Shared Services for its customers and in partnership with AITS.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop professionally appealing websites and user interfaces, using standard HTML/CSS practices.
  • Assist with UI designs and coding, creating reusable objects and templates, wireframes for web pages and email templates; manage maintenance, updates, expansions, and scaling of each design.
  • As part of a team, test code using best practices for website development and web accessibility, including mobile and responsive site design.
  • Maintain updated knowledge of new and emerging industry trends and technology.
  • Represent SOSS Change Management Communications Team in regular meetings with customers, stakeholders and management to understand and refine business and functional requirements and determine project scopes and specifications.
  • Support quality assurance, ensure the highest standards of web accessibility (WCAG and ADA) and perform unit and user-acceptance testing to identify bugs and ensure production operations run successfully.
  • Work quickly and carefully to complete website edits requested by customers.
  • Serve as Subject matter expert (SME) and present on topic whenever necessary.
  • Facilitate periodic review by connecting with content owners to ensure website data remains an accurate source of information for our business community.
  • Maintain relationships with other system and university specific webpage administrators
  • Incorporate data from back-end databases and services (Banner, Webtools, Tableau, etc...).
  • Track, compile and analyze website usage data

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Any one or any combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the following categories:
    • College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
      • 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
      • Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
      • 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
      • Bachelor’s Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
    • Work experience in IT-related functions, such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field.
  • Based on position requirements, additional education, training, and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in Business, Communications, English, Marketing, Journalism, Web Development, Instructional Design, Human Resource Development, Human Computer Interaction or a related field.
  • Experience with working with University of Illinois data (EDW, Active Directory, etc.).
  • Experience with working with Web Services and third-party APls (Campus Web Tools, Banner, Ability LMS, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of APIs, security principles, REST, SOAP, etc.
  • Experience working in a university and/or scientific unit/organization.
  • Knowledge of the University of Illinois System

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Familiarity with planning and developing websites across multiple products and organizations.
  • Working knowledge of web applications, programming languages, and web services, such as CSS, cross-browser compatibility, HTML, JavaScript, JQuery, PHP, and web user interface design (UI).
  • Experience with content management systems, such as SitePublish, Dreamweaver, WordPress.
  • Dedication to innovative, sophisticated designs and collaborative problem solving.
  • Working experience in Windows and MAC OS environments.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Ability to project a dynamic and pleasant personality in public appearances.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively.
  • Excellent communication, personal relations, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to interact with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to interpret customer's needs for web content creation, maintenance of data and web design.
  • Ability to creatively solve complex problems.
  • Ability to take the initiative and be flexible to perform new responsibilities.
  • Sound judgment and ability to exercise discretion with handling confidential and sensitive information.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform effectively, both independently and as a team member, in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities, under stringent deadlines.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5031 - Information Technology Technical Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 6/5/2023. Salary is commensurate with experience.
