DESCRIPTION

In collaboration with the Principal Investigator (PI), the Research Project Manager will lead a project to investigate the effect of different macronutrients such as amino acids, sugars and fatty acids on the function of neural circuits that regulate mating behavior in Drosophila. Analyze results, prepare manuscripts for publication, and formally present results as appropriate.

Incumbent will use their expertise in functional imaging using one- and two-photon microscopy, behavioral assays to measure mating behavior, and confocal microscopy to identify specific brain neurons with immunohistochemistry. Incumbent will use R programing to carry out bioinformatic analysis of published datasets to identify potential neural substrates of metabolic modulation. Incumbent will oversee a wide variety of standard procedures, performing the maintenance and validation of transgenic and mutant Drosophila strains, which involves PCR, DNA sequencing, manipulation, and analysis.

Incumbent will collaborate with other lab members on all aspects of the project. Train laboratory personnel in fly genetics, functional imaging, immunohistochemistry and behavioral genetics.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Expert level theoretical and sophisticated practical experimental knowledge of neural circuits and behavioral genetics acquired through a Masters degree in related field and an equivalent combination of education and experience. PhD in related field preferred.

  • Extensive demonstrated experience, skill and knowledge in successfully carrying out independent research in behavioral genetics, one- and two-photon imaging, confocal imaging, molecular biology, and biochemistry.

  • Advanced conceptual/theoretical and practical understanding of and ability to perform complex assays, two- and three-photon imaging, confocal imaging, PCR, in vitro transcription, agarose gel electrophoresis, antibody generation, immunostaining, and fluorescence microscopy.

  • Advanced experience with Drosophila genetics and modern microscopy.

  • Advanced experience writing manuscripts based on research projects, including excellent scientific writing skills and presentation skills for presenting data to a professional scientific audience.

  • Advanced and sophisticated practical experimental knowledge of current literature in fields of neuroscience, metabolic biology and behavioral genetics.

  • Expert skill and knowledge to conduct research independently, requiring only general direction by the principal investigator.

  • Proven ability to manage, train and provide work direction to other lab personnel and graduate rotation students.

  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility with students, staff, faculty, and visitors of various cultures and backgrounds.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with computer programs, including R programming for bioinformatics, image processing software such as IgorPro, ImageJ and Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator with a willingness and ability to update and increase skills and knowledge as needed.

  • Demonstrated experience maintaining lab equipment and computers including two-photon microscopes and fluorescence microscopes.

  • Knowledge of lab safety requirements and procedures, hazardous materials disposal. Knowledge/understanding and at least some experience with Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Familiarity with a Chemical Hygiene Plan addressing safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items. Willingness and ability to keep safety training current and consistent with research involvement.

  • Advanced skill to organize, set up, and maintain lab notebooks and accurate records.

  • Demonstrated skill to work collaboratively within a dynamic team environment.

  • Willingness and demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Fine motor skills for dissection procedures.

  • Willingness and ability to work safely with chemicals and high-energy lasers.

  • Some evening or weekend work based on the needs of the lab.

  • Background check required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $68,517 - $110,273 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $32.81 - $52.81

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
